CASE STUDIES

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency

Problem: Is it possible to go from collection of evidence to an arrest in under 72 hours?

Solution: A Crime Scene Unit recovered a 9mm Luger caliber firearm and 9mm Luger caliber fired cartridge cases from a homicide on a Sunday. Simultaneously, detectives interviewed witnesses and identified a potential suspect, who denied any involvement in the murder. Inconsistencies in the statement prompted investigators to execute a search warrant of the suspect’s residence, where additional 9mm Luger caliber fired cartridge cases were located. A Crime Scene Investigator entered the firearms evidence into Ballistics IQ at 4 p.m. on Monday. At 5:30 p.m. the same day, results came back to the agency that the 9mm Luger caliber firearm and all collected cartridge cases were connected. Along with other evidence, the agency obtained a warrant for the suspect’s arrest, and he was apprehended  on Tuesday and charged with First Degree Murder. This law enforcement agency informed Evidence IQ personnel that without Ballistics IQ they might have waited six months for results on their ballistic evidence.

California Law Enforcement Agency

Problem: What connections can you make with nearly 70 shooting incidents in one county over a year?

Solution: In February 2020, a law enforcement agency uploaded all 2019 firearms evidence from one station to Ballistics IQ. This station was in their highest crime area; results – 68 shooting incidents, over 300 items of evidence, and 10 Potential Links discovered. One firearm was connected to four separate shootings while another firearm was connected to three separate shootings.
